Two of my favorite images from Subway by Bruce Davidson.
I just got the Aperture edition of this book and it’s stunning. Real beauty comes out of the grit and filth that was the New York City subway system in 1980. If you’re looking to buy someone a photo book for the holidays definitely check this out.

From the MTA:
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, MTA New York City Transit employees partially dismantled R32 subway cars and loaded them onto trucks to transport them to the Rockaway Peninsula. The cars will serve as special shuttle trains that will travel along the peninsula. The shuttle will allow New York City Transit to partially restore A train service while crews continue to rebuild the A train’s tracks across Jamaica Bay. The tracks were heavily damaged during the hurricane.

Check out the beautiful old abandoned City Hall station in lower Manahttan. Trains still run through it and you can see it (though it will likely be quite dark). Stay on the 6 train downtown after Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall (first/last stop). The train uses the old station to turn around and go uptown. Alternatively, the MTA occasionally offers tours of the station.
