I’m starting a new thing where I pick things you should maybe watch on Netflix, this is the first one.
Netflix Picks: The Final Countdown.
Have you heard of this movie? It poses the somewhat unlikely scenario of a modern day (released in 1980) aircraft carrier being mysteriously transported back in time via a “time storm” to December 7th, 1941, a few hours before Pearl Harbor is to be attacked by the Japanese. The crew is then forced to deal with the paradox of whether or not to attack (and presumably easily destroy) the Japanese fleet and risk themselves being flushed out of existence or the universe collapsing or something like that. Once the decision is finally made on whether or not to attack, the “time storm” reappears and everyone is transported back to the future right as they left it.
It’s almost as though a 16 year old boy had a fleeting violent “kick everyone’s ass with weapons from the future” fantasy while playing video games, and then wrote a movie script based on that thought.
This is definitely in so bad it’s good territory, though it’s right on the fence. Remarkably, the cast includes Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen, James Farentino, Charles Durning, and Katharine Ross.

I know I’m dating myself here, but this was one of my favorite movies as a kid. This and “The Philadelphia Experiment”...
