William Langewiesche on the Amazon air crash:... →
In the fall of 2006 a private jet and a commercial airliner collided in mid-air above the Amazon. The likelihood of this event happening is extremely slim, but it did. The seven passengers on the private jet survived, the 155 aboard the commercial airliner did not. William Langewiesche looks into the details of the crash.

People of the Twin Cities! We must settle this at...
tumblelikeyougiveadamn:
There’s a movement afoot to rebrand our fair cities with a nickname so derivative and base that I can’t bring myself to type it more then once. It’s TWINCY. There, I did it.
It saddens me that my friend and collaborator Chuck Terhark is the one who brought this abomination into existence, and also that my friend Taylor Carik was so quick to support it. But if this is...

Satire in the times.
It’s not so much the issue of respect that angers me regarding this situation, it’s the fact that such significance and symbolism are attached to a shoe. Symbols have always been a popular form of cultural currency, but the more serious a culture takes something as mundane as a shoe, the more I’m wary of it. In general, this culture’s feelings on the...

Minnesota loves to vote →
east-lake:
Minnesota once again has bested all other states in voter turnout. Minnesota has been number one since 1996, and has been in the top 10 states in voter turnout ever since the United States Election Project began recording data in 1980.
77.8% voter turnout is pretty great, the national average was 61.6%. Interesting to note that the top voter turnout states are Midwestern ones,...

A bummer, why they wouldn’t make another album is beyond me. Maybe because the first one would be nearly impossible to top?
Blue Velvet (1986) by David Lynch
I watched this movie for the first time this week, sort of strange that I had never seen it before, but that happens sometimes. You’ll mention a movie and it seems like everyone has seen it, but for whatever reason, you haven’t. I thoroughly enjoyed Blue Velvet.
Here are positive and negative reviews of the film.

I would be curious to know how many people are making six figures via YouTube videos. Damn.
From one of my favorite albums of the year, Cut Copy’s In Ghost Colours. I caught these guys twice this year, both concerts were excellent. Here’s my review of one of those shows.

A great idea. Not only does it save you water, it alerts you to when the shower is ready. This isn’t an issue for me as the water in my apartment building takes approx. 15 seconds to heat up, but in old houses it can sometimes take several minutes.

Wow, I didn’t know quite a few of these tricks, and I’m usually on top of stuff like this. I was wondering why screen shots would appear seemingly randomly in my “camera roll” photo album.
